The Netherlands may be seen as heaven on earth for homosexual people when compared to many other countries, but the country is definitely not free from discrimination against those with other than heterosexual orientations.
Homosexuals, transgenders and sex workers
Hate crimes, negative social response, and minority stress are experienced by homosexuals in the Netherlands still all too often. Transgenders are even more 'invisible' and their position in Dutch diversity policies is marginal to say the least. Furthermore, sex work may be only seen as little stigmatised in the Netherlands, but still far too many sex workers report the existence of stigma. The formal legal status of sex work has definitely not yet fully done away with negative treatment by the public or service-providing institutions, exploitative working relations, violence by clients, or the multiple criminal behaviour of the ‘old fashioned’ pimp or more ‘modern’ trafficker.
