Unite for Body Rights!

If you have always had access to good sexual health services it is easy to take them for granted. But if you have had little or no sexuality education, no access to contraception, and no support during pregnancy or child birth, then the provision of these could be life changing. Unite for Body Rights is a major programme led by Rutgers WPF working to achieve this in nine countries in Africa and Asia, with funding from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Driving change

The programme can already claim success. In India Unite for Body Rights influenced the government’s groundbreaking National Adolescent Health Programme, which covers sexual health and rights and uses peer educators to reach young people wherever they are. In Ethiopia traditional birth attendants are  abandoning female genital mutilation as they acquire greater sexual and reproductive health knowledge and skills.

An alliance for sexual health and rights

Rutgers WPF and the members of the Sexual Health and Reproductive Health and Rights Alliance – AMREF Flying Doctors, Choice for Youth and Sexuality, dance4life, and Simavi – have established this four year programme to deliver education on sexual and reproductive health and rights, sexual and reproductive health services, and help the community to make them work.

Supporting our partners

Unite for Body Rights will exceed its target of reaching 2.5 million people in Asia and Africa between 2011 and 2015. The SRHR Alliance does this by working with 52 partner organisations in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Pakistan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Uganda and Tanzania. Partners like Nairobits in Kenya, DSK Bangladesh and PIDS in Pakistan. Together we are training thousands of workers in civil society organisations.

Education and advocacy

Together the SRHR Alliance members deliver a comprehensive package of education, services and the capacity building needed to create a supportive environment.

Rutgers WPF focuses on helping national partners deliver and advocate for comprehensive sexuality education. We also train and support other partners to hold their governments accountable for people’s sexual and reproductive health and rights.
